        Edward Lowe and his companions setting fire to the inn on Aldersgate Street and plundering the houses, May 16th 1790

        English School, (18th century). Medium: engraving. Date: 18th Century. Edward Lowe (c.1767-90) and William Jobbins (1769-90) set fire to Francis Gilding's house next to the Red Lion Inn on Aldersgate Street with the express purpose of stealing people's belongings in the ensuing chaos; they were both executed for their crimes; known as the Great Aldersgate Street Fire; Provenance: Private Collection.
