        The Goose Club

        Browne, Hablot Knight (Phiz) (1815-92). English. Medium: engraving. Date: 19th Century. The Goose Club was a Christmas club whereby working class people paid a small amount of money each week to a pub landlord or shop keeper, then on Christmas Eve they were allowed to come and collect their goose; as the image shows there was a lottery system which decided who got to choose their goose first; Provenance: Private Collection.
