        English School, (18th century). Medium: engraving. Date: 1773. Phillis Wheatley (c.1753-1784) African American poet; she was born in Gambia and taken as a slave to the United States where she was purchased by John Wheatley; he and his family educated Phillis and encouraged her writing; she is considered the first African poet in America and was the first female African-American to have her work published; Provenance: Private Collection.
