Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762) English aristocrat and writer; she was the wife of the British ambassador to Turkey, Sir Edward Wortley Montagu (1678-1761), and her letters are considered an invaluable resource on the manners and customs of the Muslim Orient of the 18th century; Having been scarred by smallpox as a young woman, she pioneered inoculation against the disease in England after observing its effectiveness in Turkey.
