Contrast between the two candidates at the 1907 by-election; a supporter of Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), the British philosopher, arrives in a donkey cart, whereas the voters for the Conservative candidate, Henry Chaplin (1840-1923), travel in a motor car; Russell was standing as the Women's Suffrage, Free Trade and Liberal candidate; Chaplin ultimately triumphed; Provenance: Private Collection.
