Mary Benson (1841-1918) wife of Edward Benson (1829-96) the Archbishop of Canterbury; she was also the mother of E. F. Benson (1867-1940) novelist, A. C. Benson (1862-1925) author and Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and Robert Hugh Benson (1871-1914) priest; she was called 'the cleverest woman in Europe' by Gladstone; Provenance: Private Collection.
