        Arrival of the Wellington Statue at the Arch, published in 'The Illustrated London News', 3rd October 1846

        Landells, Ebenezer (1808-60); British. Medium: engraving. Date: 1846. The Wellington Statue is a monument to Arthur Wellsley (1769-1852), 1st Duke of Wellington, victor at the Battle of Waterloo and later Prime Minister; The monument shows Wellington mounted on Copehagen, the famous charger that he had ridden at Waterloo; The statue was sculpted by Matthew Cotes Wyatt (1777-1862) and mostly made from bronze derived from French cannon captured at Waterloo; The original site of the statue was atop a victory arch at Hyde Park Corner, the arrival at which this print depicts; The sculpture was later moved to Aldershot; Provenance: Private Collection.
