The Second Matabele war was as a result of the Ndebele people revolting against the authority of the British South Africa Company; This is now celebrated in Zimbabwe as the First War of Independence; The Ndebele forces laid seige to Bulawayo between March and late May of 1896 during which the townspeople sheltered in the defensive laager, or improvised mobile fort; Provenance: Private Collection.
