        Kloof on Table Mountain, 1801

        Westall, William (1781-1850). English. Medium: pencil on paper. Date: 1801. 'Kloof' is the Afrikaans word for gorge; This particular kloof is Orange Kloof, found in an area of Table Mountain at the northern end of the Huot Bay, South Africa; Westall drew this sketch when the exploratory expedition of which he was part landed in the Cape Colony on its way to Australia; The expedition, that was to become the first ever to circumnavigate Australia, was aboard HMS Investigator and under the command of Lieutenant Matthew Flinders (1774-1814) Provenance: Private Collection.
