        'New toy presented by Ratapoil to the children of the Decembrists', from 'Le Charivari', 16 October, 1851

        Daumier, Honore (1808-79); French. Medium: lithograph. Date: 1851. 'Nouveau joujou dedie par Ratapoil aux enfans des Decembristes'; Colonel Ratapoil, a fictitious cartoon character and member of the 'Societe du Dix Decembre' (Society of the 10th December) so-called after the date of the election in 1848 which elected Charles Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (1808-73) as President of the French Republic (1848-52); a society dedicated to restoration of Bonapartism in French society and politics; the caricature is portrayed sporting a moustache reminiscent of Napoleon Bonaparte and here carries two toy characters with hammers hitting a representation of the symbol of France, Marianne; Provenance: Private Collection.
