'The Gentleman's Magazine' was founded in London by Edward Cave (1691-1754) who published under the pen name of 'Sylvanus Urban'; It was the first time that the word 'magazine' (meaning storehouse) was used to refer to a periodical; The publication of The Gentleman's Magazine ran uninterrupted for almost 200 years; Provenance: Private Collection.
