        Crossing the bar in the "Whaler" to rescue negroes from a wrecked dhow

        English School, (19th century). Medium: engraving. Date: 1873. The print is based upon sketches taken by Captain George Lydiard Sulivan (1832-1904) then commander of HMS Daphne, one of the Royal Navy's ships employed in the suppression of the slave trade in East Africa; Slaves were being transported from mainland Africa to Zanzibar and from there to Asia; Provenance: Private Collection.
