        The New Reading-Room at the British Museum

        English School, (19th century). Medium: engraving. Date: 1855. By the mid-19th century the existed reading rooms at the British Museum had been deemed inadequate and a new one was built in the then empty courtyard in the middle of the museum; The round, domed structure was designed by the architect Sydney Smirke (1798-1877) and was completed in 1857; The domed roof, based upon the Pantheon in Rome, was a masterpiece of mid-19th century technology; Provenance: Private Collection.
