        The manner of the Popish Spaniards in carrying Nicholas Burton to his execution, from 'Acts and Monuments' by John Foxe, 1563

        English School, (16th century). Medium: woodcut. Date: 1563. English merchant Nicholas Burton (d.1560) was burned at the stake by the Spanish Inquisition for heresy on November 5th, 1560, at Seville, but not before he had converted several of his fellow inmates in Cadiz jail to Protestantism; he was forced to make his final humiliating journey riding backwards on an ass wearing a mitre and robe decorated with devils; John Foxe (1516-87); Provenance: Private Collection.
