'Foxe's Book of Martyrs' is an account by John Foxe (1517-1587) of Christian martyrs throughout Western history, with particular emphasis on the suffering of English Protestants; This image is an illustration of Foxe's description of the popish priest of 'Crondall' (Crundale, in the Kentish diocese of Canterbury) upon whom punishment was wreaked for applying the words of St John to his papal bull of pardon; Provenance: Private Collection.
