        A Wild Woman and a Unicorn c. 1460

Master E. S. (c.1420-c.1468). Medium: engraving. Date: 15th Century. The Unicorn is a symbol of chastity who, legend has it, can only be tamed by the pure and true love of a virgin; This legend, which usually sees the unicorn tamed by the Virgin Mary, is subverted in this image as the unicorn has been tamed by a Wild Woman; This image was part of a pack of playing cards created by Master E. S.; Provenance: Private Collection. Photographic rights held by The Bridgeman Art Library.
