Adam Smith (1723-1790) was a Scottish social philosopher and a pioneer of political economy; One of the key figures of the Scottish Enlightenment, he is most famous for his magnum opus 'The Wealth of Nations' which is commemorated on the reverse of this coin; The coin is inscribed 'The Penny of Scotland (1 oz.), Adam Smith L.L.D.F.R.S.
