John Ryland's Library, building designed by Basil Champneys (1842-1935) and completed in 1899; library was named after John Rylands (1801-1888) an entrepreneur and philanthropist who was Manchester's first multi-millionaire; the library merged with the University of Manchester in 1972; Provenance: Private Collection.
