The Royal Manchester Institution was a learned society founded in 1823; the purpose built building in Mosley Street was designed by Charles Barry (1795-1860) and completed in 1836; the building and the Institution's collections were transferred to the Manchester Corporation in 1882, becoming the city's Art Gallery; Provenance: Private Collection.
