        The Death of Chatterton, engraved by Edward Orme, 1794

        Singleton, Henry (1766-1839) (after). English. Medium: engraving. Date: 1794. A depiction of the death of poet and pseudo-medieval poetry forger Thomas Chatterton (1752-1770). Chatterton, who wrote under the pseudonym Thomas Rowley, died from arsenic poisoning as the result of either a suicide attempt or self-medicating for venereal disease. Underneath the inscription reads: 'Behold him Muses! see your fav'rite Son ... The mind ye cherish'd, drooping and forlorn. / Cowley. Vide Gregory's Lide of Chatterton'.
