        English School, (18th century). Medium: etching. Date: 1782. An imaginary picture of the quarter-deck of Admiral Sir George Rodney's (1718-92) ship the 'Formidable' after the Battle of the Saintes (April 12 1782), during the American War of Independence in which the French navy was defeated by the British. The French fleet were under the command of the Comte de Grasse (1722-88) who is here seen surrendering. Provenance: Private Collection.
