        The Two Patriotic Duchess's on their Canvass, 1784

        Rowlandson, Thomas (1756-1827). English. Medium: engraving. Date: 1784. During the Westminster election of 1784 sisters-in-law Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire (1757-1806) and Dorothy, Duchess of Portland (1750-1794) campaigned fervently for the Whig party candidate Charles James Fox (1749-1806). It was widely reported in the press that Georgiana had kissed a butcher in exchange for a promise to vote for Fox. Provenance: Private Collection.
