        London Nightmen, illustration from 'London Labour and the London Poor' by Henry Mayhew, c.1840s

        English School, (19th century). Medium: lithograph. Nightmen were responsible for clearing cesspits and privies around the city. The job was carried out at night, hence their name, and the human extreta they collected was known as 'night-soil'. Henry Mayhew (1812-87) Provenance: Private Collection.
