Slavery, a satirical print, published in 1738

English School, (18th century). Medium: etching. Date: 1738. Satire on the unwillingness of the British government to go to war with Spain. Four Britons are pulling a plough driven by a Spaniard weilding a whip, while Robert Walpole (1676-1745) draws his sword. In the background, a Spaniard cuts off Captain Robert Jenkins's (d.1743) ear - this incident occured on his journey from Jamaica to Britain, when his ship was boarded by Spaniards. Provenance: Private Collection.
