        The Death of Mackdonwald, illustration from 'Holinshed's Chronicles', 1577

        English School, (16th century). Medium: woodcut. Date: 1577. Holinshed's Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland have long been considered a primary source of inspiration for Shakespeare's historical plays. In the entry on Macbeth and King Duncan, Macbeth is sent by the King to crush the rebellion led by Mackdonwald. When he arrives at the castle he discovers that Mackdonwald has killed himself after murdering his own wife and children. Provenance: Private Collection.
