Golden Crested Regulus, illustration from 'A History of British Birds' by William Yarrell, first published 1843

Yarrell, William (1784-1856). English. Medium: woodcut. Date: 1843. The Goldcrest (latin: Regulus regulus) is a very small passerine bird in the kinglet family. Its colourful golden crest feathers gives rise to its English and scientific names, and possibly to it being called the "king of the birds" in European folklore. Provenance: Private Collection.
