Frontispiece to 'The Torture of James Sudds and Patrick Thompson', published 1833

English School, (19th century). Medium: engraving. Date: 1833. James Sudds and Patrick Thompson were two privates in the 57th Regiment stationed in Sydney, who were condemned to particularly severe punishment after having stolen some calico from a shop in York Street in the hope of being sentenced to transportation which to them appeared preferable to the rigours of military disipline. Provenance: Private Collection.
