South Elevation of the Stone Lighthouse completed upon the Edystone in 1759, 1763

Rooker, Edward (c.1712-74). English. Medium: engraving. Date: 1768. "Showing the prospect of the nearest Land, as it appears from the Rocks in a clear calm Day." This is the third incarnation of lighthouse on Eddystone Rocks, 14 miles off the coast of Plymouth, Devon. It was designed by civil engineer John Smeaton and is modelled the shape on an oak tree, built of granite blocks. Smeaton pioneered the use of 'hydraulic lime', that sets under water, in its construction. Provenance: Private Collection.
