Master MZ (fl.c.1500). Medium: engraving. Saint Catherine of Alexandria was executed in the early 4th century by the Roman Emperor Maxentius when she refused to marry him. The spiked wheel that was intended for her execution (and with which she is still associated) was destroyed by God as an answer to her prayers and so she was beheaded instead.
