English School, (17th century). Medium: woodcut and letterpress. Date: 1653. English early modern pamphlet lamenting the abolishment of Christmas by the puritanical government. The central figure of Father Christmas proclaims "O Sir, I bring good cheere" while the roundhead soldier warns him to "Keep out, you come not here." The countryman on the otherhand is saying "Old Christmas welcome; Do not fear." The pamphlet also goes on to lampoon taxes and oppressive government. Provenance: Private Collection.
