Cartoon of Tsar Nicholas I as a Bear, c. 1830s

English School, (19th century). Medium: engraving. Tsar Nicholas I of Russia (1796-1855) was exceptionally harsh in his treatment of Poland which at the time was a personal union of Russia. The Tsar limited the liberties of Poland's constitutional monarchy and brutally suppressed the subsequent uprisings, as satirised in this cartoon. Provenance: Private Collection.
