The Old Man and his Sons, illustration from 'Aesop's Fables', 1666

Barlow, Francis (1626-1702). English. Medium: etching. Date: 1666. An old man challenges his warring sons to break a bundle of twigs, after much effort the sons give up, saying it's impossible. The father then removes one twig from the bundle and breaks it easily. The father explains- "the advantage of unity, as long as these sticks are in alliance they are invincible, but observe how feeble they are individually." Provenance: Private Collection.
