The Fox and the Stork, illustration to 'Aesop's Fables', 1666

Barlow, Francis (1626-1702). English. Medium: etching. Date: 1666. The stork drinks out of a narrow-necked vial, in revenge for the fox serving him soup in a shallow dish. The moral drawn is that the trickster must expect trickery in return and that the golden rule of conduct is to do to others what one would wish for oneself. Provenance: Private Collection.
