Holbein the Younger, Hans (1497/8-1543). Medium: pen and ink and wash. Comprising hour-glass, sundial and compass. This design was made for was made for a clock presented by Sir Anthony Denny to Henry VIII on New Year's Day 1544. Two of the notes on the sketch are in the hand of Holbein's friend the royal astronomer Nicholas Kratzer, who probably assisted in the technical design of the piece.
