French use of a reconnaissance balloon was first military use of aircraft and had a decisive contribution to the victory of the French army commanded by General Jean-Baptiste Jourdan (1762-1833) over the coalition forces of England, Hanover and Austria under the command of the Austrian general, Prince Josias von Saxe-Coburg (1737-1815); Provenance: Private Collection.
