        A Woman, called Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, c.1715-20

        Kneller, Sir Godfrey (1646-1723). English. Medium: oil on canvas. Date: 18th Century. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762) was an English aristocrat, writer and early feminist. Montagu is remembered for her lively travel writing in the form of letters, in particular those from Turkey. Having been scarred by smallpox as a young woman, she pioneered inoculation against the disease in England after observing its effectiveness in Turkey. Provenance: Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection, USA.
