Marvin Gatch: “I remember entering Mississippi and there's the famous sign which has a large magnolia on it and it says, Welcome to Mississippi, the Magnolia State. And I remember the fear and it never occurred to me that you could go from point A to point B, cross an imaginary line and have that feeling of dread.”

Patti Miller: “You literally crossed the border into Mississippi and you feel like you're in another world, a third world country, and it is like that. I mean, Mississippi is one of the poorest states in the nation, it was then and it is now. That's what I was seeing. I was really not only going back to something that was so foreign to Iowa, I was really going back to the 1800's, that's what it felt like.”
