Abby: Farms are where almost all of our food comes from and it all starts with a farmer.

Abby: Farmer are families. Farmers are helpers. And farmers are definitely hard workers.  A farmer plants seeds in the spring, lots and lots of seed, seeds for vegetables like spinach and carrots, seeds for fruit like watermelon and seeds for grain like corn and oats. Some farmers use huge tractors to plant seeds for crops. It's also their job to take care of those seeds by giving them plenty of water and making sure no weeds are growing around them. Seeds grow into plants and plants grow into the food that we eat. Once the plants have grown up just right, the fruit, the vegetables and the crops are ready to be picked or harvested.

Abby: Farms can also have animals like chickens, pigs, cows and all kinds of furry friends. Farmers also have to take good care of the animals. They give them water and food and make sure they have a safe, healthy place to live. Farms need big buildings like barns so the animals can stay safe and the equipment can be stored. They also need silos for a place to keep all those seeds.

Abby: Everything you eat in some way has come from plants and animals. Without farmers to take good care of those plants and animals we wouldn't have healthy food to eat. That's a huge job!
