Abby: This group of self-proclaimed geo kids knows a lot about rocks. Today we're learning about what they feel like, what they look like, their colors, even how heavy they are, and we're going to learn about Iowa's state rock, the geode. Are you guys ready?

Kids voices: [in unison] Yeah!

[Music]

A starfish exoskeleton.

Uh-hm. Yeah.

This is a stalactite. And it's made of limestone. So it hangs like from the ceiling of a cave.

Look, what's in there?

Oh, my goodness!

Look at these shells.

It's just like frozen in time.

Cool!

This is amber which is fossilized from sap which comes from inside a tree.

Abby: Project time. Everybody remember your safety glasses.

Dr. Franek Hasiuk: Okay, guys. Today we're going to learn about this rock here. Do you guys know what it is?

Kids voices: [in unison] A geode.

Dr. Franek Hasiuk: That's right. Geodes may not look like much on the outside, but on the inside, it's amazingly beautiful. Filled with crystals that shine in the light. Are you kids ready to crack one of these open yourself?

Kids voices:[in unison] Yeah!

Abby: We need a tool to crack this thing open, right? What is this thing called here?

Kids voices: [in unison] A mallet.

Abby: A mallet. This is going to work perfect. Which one shall we choose?

Kids voices: [in unison] This one! Marrin, Marrin. Lucas, Lucas.

Hit it!

Hit it!

[shouting]

Abby: You guys have some bits and pieces of those geodes that we smashed open. Now what have you learned about geodes today?

That it's Iowa's state rock.

Abby: And what's inside of the geode?

Quartz and calcite.

Abby: And just look how beautiful they are.

Abby: Desmond, what's your favorite kind of a rock?

Desmon: Fossil.

Abby: Which one?

Desmond: This one.
