Abby: Today we're at an elementary school in Burlington where they have an actual bank. The kids are not only the board members and the employees, they're also coming in to make deposits. Are you guys ready to show me how this works?

Kids voices: [in unison] Yeah!

[Music]

Abby: Kiana, what's your job today?

Kiana: I'm a board member today.

Abby: What does a board member do?

Kiana: You get the person's booklet. You fill out a slip. You have to put how much money they have, their account number, their name and date, and put your initial on it, and you send them to the tellers.

Abby: What does a teller do?

They count the money and put it down on sheets. Like, these are for like when people are trying to put money in, and then these are when people take money out of their bank account.

Abby: And why do you need to keep track of all those things?

So, they can keep their money in their bank account.

Abby: The bank is a really nice, safe place to keep money, right?

Yes.

Abby: What is the bookkeeper's job?

Well, we keep track of how much money a student or adult deposits.

Abby: You have adults come through?

Yes.

Abby: And it goes into their actual account?

Yes.

Abby: That's awesome! What's a withdrawal?

It's where you take out money out of the bank.

Abby: And what about a deposit?

It's where you put in money in the bank.

Abby: And I see the word "balance". What does balance mean?

The balance is the number after a withdrawal or a deposit.

Abby: CJ, why should kids put their money in the bank?

CJ: So, they can earn interest.

Abby: What is interest?

CJ: Interest is when you put money in the bank and for putting money in the bank, the bank adds money to your money, the more money that you have in the bank.

Abby: Do you make deposits in this bank?

I do make deposits in this bank every Wednesday.

Abby: What are you saving your money up for?
