The earliest known people of Iowa used rocks and spears to kill wild game. But by about 500 A.D. the Indians were using the bow and arrow on their hunting party. The bow and arrow added power, accuracy and distance that the spear could not achieve. Arrows traveled much faster, so they could kill smaller game: birds, rabbits, deer. Or go directly to the heart of a large bison.
