Juvenile Life Sentences Ruled Unconstitutional | Second Chance Kids
Video 3: The Court Reacts to States' Different Interpretations

TITLE CARD:
In January 2016, the Supreme Court issued a ruling forcing states that had resisted the Miller decision to finally act.

NARRATOR:
In Montgomery versus Louisiana, the court reaffirmed that even those who commit heinous crimes are capable of change and must be afforded an opportunity for release.

BRIAN STEVENSON, Dir. Equal Justice Initiative:
We obviously would have preferred the court articulate a categorical ban on all life without parole sentences for children. So I think we're still in conversation with not just the Supreme Court on this topic, but with the country. And I think if we're successful, we can begin to imagine how our criminal justice systems can start to change and not just be a place where we impose the harshest, most extreme punishments that the law will allow us to get away with, but instead a place where we try to help people recover.
